Fabulous Feilding

Spent yesterday in Feilding, in the Manawatu, for an interview and photoshoot for a national magazine. And the sun shone and a snowy Mt Ruapehu was our backdrop and there was even a random bloke riding his horse down to the local shops. As you do.

I love rural New Zealand...

The QT Museum Wellington

Five and a bit years ago, when we returned from the UK, the Animator's employers kindly put us in the Museum Art Hotel for six weeks. It was wonderful, if slightly surreal, living in a hotel.

Fast forward to last year and the Australian QT brand bought the hotel, its first on this side of the ditch, and re-branded it as the QT Museum Wellington.

Last night we got to play tourists in our own town when we stayed there the night for a story. I'm pleased to report it was as glorious as I remember, with so much modern art strewn about it's almost like staying in a gallery. The rooms were gorgeous and the high tea was even more so. Highly recommended if you need to lay your head down in central Welly.

A few visuals of our lovely night away.

The fabulous Philippines

Apologies for the lack of visual evidence of last week's media trip to this glorious smattering of islands. But my body is still in shock from the transition from 30+ degree temperatures to the high t of eight that Welly has managed to stretch itself to today.

But there was bustling Metro Manila, a visit to Cebu and two islands - Miniloc and Bohol - as well as a food walking tour, the Chocolate Hills, a visit to a sustainable bee farm, being awoken by monkeys on the roof and island hopping in settings so stunning they almost looked Photoshopped.

Now I just have to craft it all into stories.....

Here are a few pics from last week - more to come when I can find five minutes amongst the madness.

Back home - and food bloggers

Yes, I know the two aren't related. But I'm just back from the gloriously hot Philippines (come back 30+ degrees, all is forgiven!) and once I have sorted out my photos I promise to share some here.

But, in the meantime, am playing catch-up. Here from last Saturday's Dominion Post Your Weekend cover story is my piece about the rise and rise of food bloggers (click here to read).

Maranui Cafe

A few months ago I wrote about the iconic Welly seaside cafe, The Maranui, and how to replicate its interior style for a new online Stuff series entitled High Street to Home.

That series kicked off today with my story about the Maranui Cafe (click here to read).

Kamusta (Hello) to the Philippines!

Have been so frantic meeting deadlines I've neglected to mention that next Thursday I head to the Philippines on a week's press trip, thanks to the Innovative Travel Company, Philippine Airlines and the Philippines Department of Tourism.

Am particularly looking forward to the 30+ degree heat, and the delicious cuisine. Doing the happy dance.

I won something!

It's a truth universally acknowledged that the Animator is the lucky one in our household. He often wins raffles, competitions and Lotto, including a couple of decent wins over the years. Go anywhere with him where there's a chance of winning something, and he's the one who will take it out. Luck of the Irish, maybe?

I, on the hand, must have annoyed Lady Luck in a previous (or this) life. In my vast number of years on this planet, all I can recall winning is, in no particular order, a hideous knitted toilet roll doll holder thingy (I was about five so...), a subscription to a magazine and a meat pack (of no great use to a non meat muncher).

So no-one was more surprised than I when, at a Victoria University alumni book reading event with five of NZ's leading authors and poets last night, my name was drawn as the winner of the authors' latest books. Admittedly, I'm probably the least deserving of the prize, given that I already get lots of lovely free books each month thanks to my North & South Magazine reviewing gig. But I don't review any NZ books, so last night's unprecedented win was especially sweet.

I also had some other good news yesterday (can't say until its finalised), but a good day all round.

Throwback

I was commissioned to write a piece for a national magazine about a Sex and the City marathon screening coming up.

But I had to laugh when a courier dropped off these old school discs on Friday - really rocking the 90s vibe in this household this weekend!

And yes, 13 years after the series finished (we won't mention the woeful movies), the girls still manage to bring the sass.

Big Dog Walk Wellington

Yesterday we joined hundreds of other woofers for the Big Dog Walk Wellington. Bristol was beside himself with excitement, and the sunshine played along too.

A fabulous end to a crazy busy week.

Best business class services

Over the past few years, I've been lucky enough to travel in the pointy end of the plane several times (on media trips, of course, not because I've suddenly come into oodles of cash).

My story about five of the best is published today (click here to read).

Business Class is every bit as gorgeous as you'd imagine it to be (apart from the fact you have to endure the disgruntled stares of other passengers when they board you first). But the whole experience is so divine it makes it difficult to turn right when boarding the plane ever after. If my surname was Zuckerberg, it's how I'd travel all the time.
