A long weekend at the beach

We skived off Thursday to the beach house for three glorious nights. And the sun shone and we topped up with the Vitamin E we have been cruelly denied for so long.

There were leisurely walks on the beach and the first G&Ts of the season, taken on a patch of scrabbly lawn we have christened the gin lawn. Thanks to our duty free booty of Bombay Sapphire, I am planning to be a frequent visitor to the gin lawn this coming summer.

On Friday lunchtime while the Animator went into Levin to buy manly things at the hardware store, Bristol and I went for a long run along the smooth sweep of sand, my first run in ages. And it was fabulous - not another human or canine in sight.

Friday afternoon a kindly man in an enormous truck dumped this load of mulch over the fence for our garden (the reason we had to be there Friday as they only deliver on weekdays). Both the Animator and I have the blisters to show for shovelling this lot into wheelbarrows and onto our garden. That's the last time I volunteer my services.

In between digging mulch and complaining about digging said mulch, I started - and finished - a 1500 word article that's due before I go overseas next week, as well as completing a book review and starting research on another story, so go me.

Best laugh of the weekend happened this afternoon when two kids came to the door selling raffle tickets for their hockey club or some such thing. The first prize was a side of dead cow and the second was a meat pack. The look on their faces when I told them that, as vegetarians, the prizes were of little use to us, was priceless. You could almost see them thinking, 'What is this vegetarianism you speak of?' Bet they've never met one in their lives.

Cold

Someone has sat on the remote and fast-forwarded to winter.

Today on my walk to work I was swaddled like the Michelin Man (although I do love any opportunity to whip out the softest leather gloves I bought in Seoul last year).

Yesterday, when the weather gods hadn't totally lost their marbles, I arranged a post-work Monday run with a friend from my running group, Jeanne-Marie (French, been in NZ a couple of months, adorable). I spent most of this afternoon hoping against hope she would cancel and I could chain myself to the radiator and drink hot tea until it scaled my lips. But she didn't and so tonight we ran like mad women into the teeth of a southerly gale and tried in vain to keep our extremities warm. But it was good to catch up on the gossip and now it is done.

I cannot insert myself into the European summer quickly enough.

This little guy has buggar all to do with being cold but thought I should share, given it's the cutest wee thing I've seen in a long time (Bristol the Wonder Dog excepted, of course).

My newest crush

Bristol would kill me if he knew, but I spent a chunk of the weekend fraternising with the enemy.

On Saturday night it was Tab and Chris's two gorgeous ragdoll cats, Lola and Frankie, and today I popped in to see the newest addition to my friend Rachel's whanau - a tiny wee bundle of fur called Hershey. And Hershey's older sister, Honey.

I almost got stoned on Vitamin D on the run home - the sunshine was glorious. The last story of the weekend was written, (yay for me, I did EVERYTHING on my list), there was a walk in the Town Belt and a laugh with our English friend Sarah (mum of Betty, one of Bristol's favourite GFs) and a group of her mates who were rolling painted boiled eggs down the hill (!)

It was, all in all, a Very Good Weekend.

Today's visuals are of Rachel's fur babies. Cute doesn't even come close.

The yin and yang of fat-busting

Last night there was the fat-busting run

Today there was this calorific carnival of donuts, care of our boss.

As my mother likes to say, it's all about balance...
