Loving this pup's attitude

Which is kind of a metaphor for my week!

Happy weekend, y'all.

Christmas already?!

Last week I received my first Xmas party invite for the year - from a gorgeous skincare company I've recently done some work for. I would love to go but sadly will be flying to Europe that night.

That aside, how the hell did it get to the end of the year already?

This blog needs

more cake. Which is why last week I whipped up these delicious gingerbread loaves that we learnt to make at the Country Cooking School a few weeks ago (okay so nil points for appearance, but they taste divine).

And this morning I made this mango mascarpone tart as a friend we haven't seen for ages is popping over. We shall sit in the garden which, thank the baby Jesus, is bathed in sunshine, and stuff our faces, drink a cold pinot gris and laugh like drains.

Happy Labour Weekend, y'all.

Living in a hotel

When we came back from the UK in 2011, the Animator's employers kindly put us up in Wellington's Museum Art Hotel for six weeks. Not that the Animator saw much of it - he was working stupidly long hours finishing the film Tin Tin and would leave when it was dark and get home long after I'd turned in.

And although it was glorious living with such eclectically curated art, often being the only one in the gym and pool and having a daily cleaner, there were a few odd things about living in a hotel. Such as getting home from work each night and having to fight your way through a cocktail party in the lobby, or the need to make small talk with strangers before the first coffee of the day. But on balance it was lovely and one day I must write something about it.

Recently that hotel changed hands and tonight I've been invited to the media launch of what's being re-branded the QT Museum Hotel. I'm really looking forward to walking through those doors again.

WOMAD

I have been invited to the launch of WOMAD 2017 at Parliament tonight.

And even though I have far too much to do and not enough time to do it, I will make an effort to swing by because it looks like being a lot of fun.

I'm back

Apologies for the radio silence - it has been a fraught week, one that has felt a little like a game of snakes and ladders (two steps forward, one huge slide back).

But the wheels have been super-glued back on and here's hoping they stay that way.

On the positive side of the ledger, we settled on the beach house on Friday so it is all over rover; we have the dosh in our hot little hands and now we need to figure out what to do with it. The buyer has emailed to say he's ecstatic in his new home and although I will miss some things about the beach, on balance it feels like we've done the right thing.
In the meantime, here's a story of mine from last week's NZWW of a fab Welli woman whose eco-friendly company Munch was invited to contribute to this year's Emmy's celebrity goodie bags (click here to read).

Interviews

The last few days have featured wall-to-wall interviews for stories - with everyone from an elite male ballet dancer (did you know they are generally fitter than rugby players?!) and a green building architect to a golf pro, a chef and an entrepreneur. I am now all questioned out.

But it's never a bad thing to be busy when you're self-employed. Now I just have to write the bleeding stories...

In the meantime, here's the second of two stories I have in this month's NEXT Magazine, a profile of the amazing fitness guru Kellie Rennie (click here to read).

Face to Face

Here's the second of two stories I have in this month's North & South Magazine, an interview with the amazing Elizabeth Barbalich on the 10th anniversary of her company, Antipodes Nature (click here to read).

Country Cooking School

Along with green tea, doggie kisses and cracking the spine of a new book, one of my favourite things in the world is Saturday morning sleep-ins.

But yesterday we forsook sleep for an early drive to Featherston to attend Mary Biggs' charming Lavender's Green Cooking School (for a story for a national magazine). Along with three others, we spent the day gathering food from Mary's 35-acre farm, cooking it and eating it.

It was a fantastic day and if you're lucky enough to live in Aotearoa and want a fun, educational and scrumptious day, head on over the big, winding hill to the Wairarapa to visit the fabulous Mary at her envy-inducing rural sanctuary.
