The QT Museum Wellington

Five and a bit years ago, when we returned from the UK, the Animator's employers kindly put us in the Museum Art Hotel for six weeks. It was wonderful, if slightly surreal, living in a hotel.

Fast forward to last year and the Australian QT brand bought the hotel, its first on this side of the ditch, and re-branded it as the QT Museum Wellington.

Last night we got to play tourists in our own town when we stayed there the night for a story. I'm pleased to report it was as glorious as I remember, with so much modern art strewn about it's almost like staying in a gallery. The rooms were gorgeous and the high tea was even more so. Highly recommended if you need to lay your head down in central Welly.

A few visuals of our lovely night away.

Big Dog Walk Wellington

Yesterday we joined hundreds of other woofers for the Big Dog Walk Wellington. Bristol was beside himself with excitement, and the sunshine played along too.

A fabulous end to a crazy busy week.

The March on Washington - Aotearoa

This morning, we were the first of 166 countries around the globe to support the March on Washington.

The Welly march started at Parliament and wound its way to Civic Square over two hours. It was strangely comforting to be with people whose sadness reflected my own. But also to hope that love will indeed find a way to trump hate.

Right, so that's my activism register topped up for the next wee while...

How freaking cool is this?

While everyone is out frolicking in the sun I, alas, am lashed to my computer wading through a never ending list of stories.

But while researching a travel piece, I came across this, a time-lapse miniature Wellington by local film-maker Jared Gray.

It's a pretty spectacular look at the coolest wee capital in the world (click here to view).

Heavenly home

I was lucky enough to spend this morning nosing around this fabulous Welli house for a story for an interiors magazine.

Be assured that my out-of-focus, surreptitious snaps are in no way indicative of how gorgy this reno is ...you'll have to wait for the story to see.

But in my 15 or so years of scribbling about houses, this is one of the loveliest I've had occasion to visit. No surprises too that the owner was a doll. All  in all, a good day.

Another Welli anniversary story

Happy Anniversary, Wellington

This month, my glorious city celebrates 150 years as New Zealand's capital.

The first of a couple of stories I've done to celebrate this milestone is published in this week's NZ Woman's Weekly (click here to read).

What we always knew....

The BBC, my eternally wise former employer, has just named Welli as one of the hottest cities to visit in 2015 (click here to read).

Quietly chuffed that my wee city, the southern most capital in the world, was recognised.

Welli's boutique museums

This week's New Zealand Herald's travel section features my piece on the quirky boutique museums that are tucked into all sorts of corners of my glorious city (click here to read). Or this link to read it online at the Herald's website.

One of the museums featured, The Holocaust Centre of NZ, had special significance this week as I was there interviewing the 80-year-old founder for another story. Am amazing woman who fled the Nazis and became the matriarch of this country's premier photography whanau, after the interview she gave me a lift home! I hope I have even one-tenth of her cojones when I'm that age.

Another Welly Home

No time for words today - been frantic doing some work for a previous contract. Instead you shall have my second story from the November issue of Your Home & Garden Magazine (click here to read).

The answer to a question a friend asked me the other day is Yes, I do plan to write about almost every house in Wellington (well the nice ones, anyway...)

In love with

the adorable restaurateur Valentina Dias and her stunning Seatoun home (pictured below), where I spent an enjoyable hour this morning for a national magazine article. If I hadn't been so preoccupied with chatting and taking notes, I would have remembered to snap pics of the amazeballs views from every room of her house.

Saturday errands included a visit to my favourite shoe and handbag repair guys (they always greet me like a long lost daughter) and the usual Samba around the farmers market. Later there was an extended walk with the Hound and his favourite big dogs, Riley and Simba, who could easily chomp him but are ever so gentle with my wee darling. We are now about to sit down to this movie which, the boys at work tell me, is as quirky and cute as the trailer would suggest.

And, good news just to hand, the wonderful Wellington mayor Celia Wade-Brown has held onto her position for another term (and yes, I was one of the few who bothered to vote).

Holy S*&t!!!

The day started with the final inspection of our rental property and the signing of hundreds of pieces of paper with our departing tenants; there was some cleaning while I waited for the carpet guy to turn up. Then a few hours in the hairdressers chair with gunk on my head.

And the creeping dread that I had left the oven on in the rental. The carpet cleaner was, of course, long gone so I high-tailed it home and hurriedly drove up to Thorndon. At 2.31pm I was sat at the lights outside the Supreme Court in downtown Wellington when the car started to move. Thinking I had my foot down on the brake too hard I eased it off and moved forward a bit. But still the car shook. Bristol, sitting patiently in the passenger seat, started to bark and then the road turned into a wave and I honestly thought the car was going to flip over. Some screaming may have been involved, there was certainly some swearing and my hands didn't stop shaking for some time afterwards.

Later, there was much texting and visiting of friends and neighbours to ensure everyone was okay, especially those who live alone. It's true that a crisis brings everyone together but holy mother of God I could have done without that jolt, and the continual parade of aftershocks.

Would someone please give Welly a jumbo packet of Tums to calm her down...
