A not-so-merry Christmas

My story on one of the worst Christmases of my life is in today's NZ Herald Canvas Magazine (click here to read).

No matter where you are in the world, hoping you have a better one than I did all those years ago.

Merry Xmas

Nothing says a Kiwi Christmas like fresh cherries and flowering pohutukawa. Well that, and a glass of something extremely cold from a Martinborough vineyard, of course.

The weather gods have finally figured out what they're supposed to be doing and the forecast for the next few days features lots of lovely sunshine.

Hope the fat geezer in the red suit is good to you. Wherever you are, and whatever you're doing, have a very merry Xmas.

Happy New Year!

Q: "Did you have a relaxing two-week Xmas break?"

A: "No, I have a bach (beach house)."

Apologies for the radio silence - we have spent the past two weeks at the new bach where there is no cell or internet service (I cannot begin to tell you how glorious it was to unplug for the duration).

We, of course, don't do idle: our days were shaped by the ripping up of carpet, stripping of wall-paper and knocking down of walls, interspersed with twice daily visits to the beach (including several glorious early morning runs where we had the whole sandy expanse to ourselves), work (I had two stories to write over the break) as well as copious amounts of G&T and cold white wine.

There were visits from friends for a night (and their dog), Christmas arvo at the beach with mates who have a bach two streets from ours (and four other dogs - Bristol was in canine heaven) and a fabulous New Year's Eve with other friends with a waterfront bach.

Bristol has taken to the beach like a duck to orange sauce: he has overcome his fear of water and is obsessed with chasing sticks into the surf. Which, of course, means he leaves sandy deposits wherever he goes and his overgrown locks have taken on a distinct surfer-hippie-dread-locked look. He is badly in need of a hot date with a pair of grooming shears.

As for us, we are tired but happy; it was probably one of the best Xmas breaks I've ever had. I can't say I'm best pleased about returning to work on Monday but there is much to look forward to and some exciting stuff just around the corner.

Apologies too for failing miserably on the photographic front; despite the marvellous two weeks, I failed to take one single photo. I have also failed to compile the usual yearly round-up; expect that sometime later this week.

For now, there are three loads of washing to be done, lawns to be mowed and cupboards to be filled. I hope your break was suitably festive and here's to a fabulous 2015...

Christmas the easy way

Yesterday started with these cute sugar mice from our neighbour, Tom (aged eight or so).

It was followed by a walk with the doggie meet-up crew on a beach about an hour up the coast. And then bubbles and egg-nog back at one of the members' lovely farmhouses.

Before we raced back to ours for a relaxed barbie in the scorching sun with our friend Andy. No family arguments, no angst over presents and defo none of the crap that usually keeps company with Christmas. It was simple, easy-going and one of the best I've ever had...

An expensive way to say Merry Christmas

I can count on one hand the number of items I bought from John Lewis during the six and a bit years I lived in the UK.

But, as usual, their Christmas campaign to buy more crap you don't need, or can't afford, is a sweetie. It's also kind of criminal that it cost about seven million quid to produce but apparently obscene advertising budgets are okay if they get the tills ringing.

Still, I had a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat when I watched it, so it might be time to put the cynicism back in its box (at least until after the fat man in the red suit has been).

Watch and enjoy and have a fantabulous day no matter where in the world you are...

This made me laugh today

A colleague, knowing the marketing team's enduring love of Breaking Bad, spiced up the work kitchen with this:

Yes, the middle canister is labelled Blue Meth. It's actually coloured sugar. He also went to great lengths to source the exact same canister. Genius.

Meanwhile, this table, which you can only see a fraction of, holds the entire contents of my breakfast. And lunch.

I am eternally grateful the corporate slog is over for another year; me and my waistline can no longer cope with the calorific overload. The time has well and truly come for a sugar/alcohol/carb intervention.

Putting my party pants on

I hope this isn't how I feel tomorrow. Or Sunday. Or the day after that.

I have three Christmas parties in three days, kicking off tonight with my work soiree. I have lined my stomach, raided the bathroom cabinet for Panadol and girded my loins for seasonal madness.

Let the marathon begin...
